What "Weightless" Actually Means in a Hair Oil

"Weightless" is on the front of a great many hair products, and it is doing very little work. This is our attempt to say what it can actually mean in a hair oil, what it means in ours, and where the honest limits of that explanation are — including a claim we removed from our own product page.

Short answer

Weightless does not mean nothing is left on your hair. If nothing were left, the product would have done nothing. What it can reasonably mean is that most of what you sprayed leaves the hair on its own, and only a very small fraction stays behind. Our position, which we will separate carefully from what we can prove, is that this small remainder is not a rounding error — it is the part that does the work.

Before the mechanism: what kind of claim this is

Two different kinds of statement follow, and we would rather label them than blur them together.

The first kind is composition. Whether an ingredient is volatile or not, and what a supplier's specification says, are checkable facts and we treat them that way. The second kind is our explanation of why one material performed better than another in our salon. That is a working hypothesis. We arrived at it by comparing materials on real heads of hair over a long period, it is the reasoning our formulas are built on, and it is still not something we have measured. We will say which is which as we go.

What is actually in a hair oil

Set aside brand language and there are broadly two kinds of ingredient in a leave-in oil.

Things that stay. Plant oils and non-volatile silicones remain on the hair until you wash them out. They are what deliver shine, slip and conditioning. They are also, by definition, weight. Argan oil is in this group, and so is one of the silicones in our formulas.

Things that leave. Volatile carriers — in our case cyclopentasiloxane and cyclohexasiloxane — spread the product evenly and then evaporate off the hair. Their job is distribution, not conditioning.

The ratio between those two groups is what a word like "weightless" is really describing. A formula that is mostly things-that-stay will always be felt on fine hair, no matter how carefully it is applied. A formula that is mostly things-that-leave can be sprayed at the roots. This is also why the label "hair oil" tells you almost nothing on its own: two products with that name can sit at opposite ends of this scale.

What we tested

Here is the part that is specific to us, and it is the strongest thing we have to offer on this subject.

We tried cyclomethicone from a number of different suppliers. On paper these are the same material — the same INCI name goes on the ingredient list either way. In the salon they were not the same at all. The differences in how hair felt after drying were large enough that we could tell them apart without being told which was which, and one supplier's material was clearly better than the rest. That is what we ended up building No.115 and No.215 on.

So the interesting question stopped being "how fast does it evaporate" and became "what is different about what stays."

Our hypothesis, stated as a hypothesis

A volatile carrier is not perfectly volatile. A small non-volatile fraction remains, and the supplier's specification sheet gives an upper limit for how much of it there can be. Our belief is that this remainder — the part that does not fly off — is what separated the materials we tested, and that a base which leaves behind a trace of something is better on hair than one that leaves behind nothing.

Three honest caveats:

  1. An upper limit is not a guarantee that anything is there. A specification saying "no more than X" is a ceiling, not a floor. A batch could sit far below it and still be within spec. This is a real limitation of our reasoning, and it is also why we do not put that figure on the front of the bottle.
  2. Other explanations exist. Purity, the ratio of related molecules in the mix, trace impurities — any of these could account for what we felt. We have not isolated the variable.
  3. We have not measured any of this. We compared finished results on hair, which is the test that matters to a hairdresser and the weakest possible evidence for a mechanism.

We would rather tell you we chose a material because of a difference we could feel and cannot fully explain, than dress the explanation up as settled chemistry.

A claim we removed

Until recently this product page said that the base evaporates from the hair within five minutes. We took that sentence down, and it is worth explaining why, because it illustrates the whole problem with the word "weightless."

We went back to the safety data sheet and the specification for the material we actually use, and there is no number in either document from which five minutes can be derived. The evaporation rate is given as a ceiling with no lower bound, and the vapour pressure at room temperature is in fact lower than water's. How long it really takes depends on how much you applied, how thickly, the airflow, the temperature and the surface area of your hair — and under a hot dryer it is a completely different situation than on a still day. "Five minutes" sounded precise, which is exactly what made it a bad claim: it was specific, unconditioned, and unsupported.

Nothing about the product changed. What changed is that we now describe the base by what it does — nearly all of it leaves — rather than by a stopwatch we never held.

How to read "weightless" on any product

Since the word is not regulated into meaning anything, here is what we would look at instead:

  • Read the top of the ingredient list, not the front of the bottle. The first two or three ingredients are most of the product. If they are all things that stay, the product will be felt.
  • Ask whether the instructions let you near your roots. A product that has to be kept to the mid-lengths and ends is telling you what it is.
  • Judge it dry, the day after. Almost everything feels light for the first hour.
  • Watch for time claims with no conditions attached. We made one ourselves, so this is not a criticism of anyone else — but a number without a stated set of conditions is not a measurement.

Where our products fit

Both of our formulas are built on a volatile base with a small amount of argan oil and broccoli seed oil left on the hair, which is what makes it possible to spray them from the roots to the ends. No.115 is the lighter one, for fine to normal hair; No.215 keeps the same base and is recalibrated for hair that is stiff, thick or hard to settle. Neither contains water, which is why they can also be applied to dry hair before heat.

What neither does is remove weight from your hair. They are light because of what they leave behind, not because they take anything away.

FAQ

Q. If almost all of it evaporates, what am I paying for?
A. For what remains, and for the fact that it distributed evenly before it left. The carrier is not filler — getting a very small amount of oil spread uniformly over a whole head of hair is difficult, and that is the job it does.

Q. Is a volatile silicone the same as "silicone-free"?
A. No, and we do not describe our products as silicone-free. They contain silicones and are better for it. What they do not do is leave a heavy silicone film on the hair.

Q. Does "weightless" mean it does not need to be washed out?
A. Something remains, so wash your hair as you normally would. It is not a build-up-heavy product in our experience, but it is not nothing.

Q. How do you know the difference between suppliers was real and not expectation?
A. We do not know it to a standard that would satisfy a laboratory. What we can say is that the difference was consistent, obvious to the hands doing the work, and large enough that we changed our formula over it.

Q. Would you change your position if someone measured it?
A. Yes. It is a working explanation, and a better one would replace it.
